Dating tools: Connection cards

Someone alert Edith Wharton—calling cards are back. Two new lines of dating cards have appeared on the market, allowing singletons to approach potential pickups without saying a word. The 21st century comes into play when recipients head to the Web to check out their admirer’s online profile.

Someone alert Edith Wharton—calling cards are back. Two new lines of dating cards have appeared on the market, allowing singletons to approach potential pickups without saying a word. The 21st century comes into play when recipients head to the Web to check out their admirer’s online profile.

Created by John and Rachel DeAlto, FlipMe is a deck of 30 dating cards ($24.99), each inscribed with a single message: “I’ve said ‘what if’ too many times… not this time.” They’re intended for “people who make your stomach flip in everyday life,” says Rachel. Users hand a card to a stranger, who then finds the dealer’s individualized profile on flipmedating.com. “Unlike eHarmony and Match.com, [we’re] not promising love; we’re promising attraction,” says John.

Using a similar system, Cheek’d ($25) mixes up the messages on the 50 cards in a single package. These sleek black cards have snarky phrases such as Parents love me, I just put all my drinks on your tab, and I still have a job. However, lovers aren’t the only hopefuls who head to cheekd.com; “[It] doesn’t have to be about dating; it’s about connecting with people,” says founder Lori Cheek. Both products come with short-term access to their respective websites, but subscription fees are required after that period (three months for $14.99 for FlipMe, one month for $9.95 for Cheek’d).

Cheek has tucked her own cards in sneakers in the locker room, bags at the gym, and even in someone’s meal. When she’s feeling really ballsy, she’ll approach celebrities: At Morandi in August, she slipped newly divorced Larry David a card and said, “Trust me, you might need this.” In the upcoming weeks, Cheek’d will be translated into additional languages and members may be able to customize their own cards.

Cheek says that while dating sites keep “people on the computers for hours, [dating cards] let you shop on the street.” At a recent party for FlipMe, New Yorkers marveled over the novelty cards, but some daters were doubtful. Magician Josh Beckerman noted that he prefers to pick up chicks the old-fashioned way: “Hi, my name is Josh. Do you want to fuck?”—Melanie Wallner
