let's get cheeky

So in my never-ending quest to poke and prod into the way people interact with each other, I've uncovered two new flirting trends that I think are hilarious/awesome/potentially try-able.

Credit for the first one goes to my sister, who was telling me about a new site called Cheek'd.

 Sign up with the site and you get a set of 50 notecards with flirty sayings on them. When you spot an attractive stranger, instead of awkwardly making small talk or slipping them your number, you can just hand them this card, which has a link to your unique profile on the site. From there, the other person can decide whether to contact you or not.

I love this idea because it combines the best of online and real-world dating. Last night a friend and I were discussing online dating and we came to the conclusion that there’s no substitute for actually meeting someone face-to-face; once the in-person interaction begins, you can tell very quickly whether you’re interested or not. Online dating can be a waste of time because you have to go through the whole messaging-back-and-forth dance, analyzing their profile, stalking them online, running a search for them on their university’s home page (or maybe that’s just me J) before meeting up. And after all that effort, when you finally meet face-to-face, it might all be worthless because there’s just no interest. This way you get the in-person interaction factor, but you also get the ease and convenience of communicating online.

Moving from the super-sophisticated to flirting for 5 year olds, this NY Daily News article talks about how adults are using Silly Bands to flirt in crowded nightclubs. It’s low-pressure, low-stress, totally random and doesn’t carry the promise of “finding” each other later or prolonging the interaction. So the next time you’re eying someone in a club and trying to figure out if he’s cute or not, just walk up to him and hand him a Silly Band. No strings attached. I don’t know what my 7 year old cousin does with her five million Silly Bands, but I hope to god that this is not it.

 Anyway, I know what flirting tactics I’ll be using this weekend :-) Later gators…
